Grade Level: 7 and 8
Subject Area: Social Studies

Women had unique experiences during the Holocaust. They were required to be caretakers, keepers of tradition, and a stabilizing unit of the family. Women became resourceful and flexible as they helped rescue others from the Nazi oppression. The risks they took to act as resisters and partisans were great and showed these women as being courageous human beings.

This unit is a WebQuest on Women Rescuers, Resisters, and Partisans. It is presented as an interactive activity for students to investigate the unique roles women played in the Holocaust. Students will be asked to work in cooperative teams. Each member will be assigned the role of becoming an expert on women rescuers, resisters, or partisans. Guided questions are presented to each of the members in order to assist each student in their quest for information. The WebQuest has active links available in order to help students focus on their particular assignments.

The WebQuest requires each “expert” to submit his/her work to the group creating a booklet. While researching information students are required to keep a journal. The journal requires students to write their feelings and reactions to the information they are researching. Finally the group must decide on a cover and compile all of their work. In addition to the research and booklet, students are required to develop a final project based on creative expression. The team chooses to create a web site, write original poetry, create artwork, write a song, or develop a mural.

A rubric follows the WebQuest which will give the students guidelines in what type of work is expected as well as assistance for evaluation.
