New Jersey South Asian Women’s Film Festival

Asian American Film and Theater Project

  Day-long festival featuring films by independent South Asian female artists, films focusing on

  women’s issues, filmmaker Q&As, and panel discussions exploring representations of women 

  in film and the identity of female filmmakers.

Creation of a Multimedia Orientation Presentation for Historic Speedwell

Friends of Historic Speedwell

  Creation of a multimedia orientation video for Historic Speedwell that will introduce visitors to

  the site’s history. A DVD version will also be created for offsite use.

Cleopatra’s World Lecture Series

Camden County College Foundation

  Seven-part lecture series on Ancient Egyptian history, culture, and study to be held in

  association with the Franklin Institute’s Cleopatra exhibit, "The Search for the Last Queen of

  Egypt." 

Conference Commemorating Kristallnacht

Drew University, Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study

  Day-long conference focused on the responses of U.S. presidents from FDR to Obama to the

  Holocaust and other incidences of genocide.

Water: Exhibition, Interpretation, and Related Public Programs

Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University

  Creation of an exhibition of paintings, sculpture, video, and works on paper that will explore

  the subject of water.  Interpretive elements include signage, a reading room, and a public

  symposium.

Creation of an Online Digital Library for the National Heritage Area

Crossroads of the American Revolution, Inc.

  Creation of an online digital library containing photographs of National Heritage Area sites

  accompanied by interpretive text. A public launch event will also be held.

Seven Steps to Freedom

Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission

  Creation of seven cell phone audio tours exploring the history of African Americans and the

  Underground Railroad in Salem County and an introductory podcast placing this history into a

  broader context.

"Material Translations: Artists’ Books from 1970 to Now" - Two Panel Discussions

Arts Council of Princeton

  Two panel discussions on the history of artists’ books to be held in association with an artists’

  books exhibition. A free brochure containing an essay by the exhibit curator will also be

  produced.

Summer Justice Film Series: The Yes Men

Cape May Film Festival

  Six library screenings of the documentary film The Yes Men Fix the World followed by

  discussions on corporate ethics

A Woman Speaking to Women: The Political Art of Nina Allender

Alice Paul Institute

  Hosting a traveling exhibit for twelve weeks, featuring the political artwork of Nina Allender,

  produced in support of the women’s suffrage movement, and sponsoring a public lecture on

  the means by which the national women’s suffrage campaign was conveyed to the average

  New Jersey woman.

Human Rights Mural Comes to Life

Juvenile Education and Awareness Project

  Panel discussion on the historical and ethical dimensions of global human rights issues. One of

  the panelists, Nobel laureate Rigoberta Menchu Tum, appears on a mural that was recently

  painted at the event venue.

Jews and Moslems: The Shared Cultural Heritage

Institute of Semitic Studies

  Panel discussion on the history and significance of Yemenite social culture followed by

  presentations of Yemenite cultural traditions.

  Four-part lecture series exploring the cultural dimensions of medicine, food, holidays, and

  Talk on the struggles of immigrant laborers from the 1913 Paterson silk strike to today to be

  held in association with the Second Annual Passaic County History Day.

Patriot, Pirate or Both: A Reflection on the Justification of Patriot Pirates

Barnegat Bay Decoy and Baymen's Museum

  Talk exploring social and political justifications for the use of patriot pirates during the  

  American Revolutionary War coupled with the tour of a related exhibit.

National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Jersey

  Living history portrayal of John Woolman coupled with a scholarly presentation and discussion

  of his impact on Quaker attitudes toward slavery.

Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission

  Two-part lecture series on courthouse architecture and legal history to be held in the newly  

  restored Salem County Courthouse, the oldest functioning courthouse in the state.

Peeking Over the Wall of Separation between Church and State

Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County

  Talk examining the history of the First Amendment as it relates to the issue of the separation of

  church and state.

Reflections on Justice: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Holocaust Resource Center

  Two-hour seminar examining the role played by Eleanor Roosevelt in the creation of the

  Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Thurgood Marshall: A Justice For All

West Caldwell Public Library

  One-man play focused on the career of Justice Thurgood Marshall coupled with a scholarly 

  presentation providing a context for understanding his contributions.

  Leaders of the social justice movements of the 1960s will join in a panel discussion on civil 

  rights, social empowerment, and peace.

Battlefield Archaeology - Some New Insights into Custer's Last Stand

Battlefield Restoration and Archaeological Volunteer Organization

  Presentation using battlefield archaeology to explore the different justifications used for the  

  conflict at Little Bighorn.

  Small group exercise and public program examining the historic flexibility of professional ethics in  

  times of "emergency," such as in Vichy France and the contemporary United States.

Olga J. Wagenheim Papers and Oral History Archival Processing Project

The Newark Public Library

  Processing materials donated by Latino scholar and archivist Olga J. Wagenheim to the Puerto 

  Rican Community Archives for use by scholars, students, and the general public.

 

Voices from the Golden Age of RCA: A Workforce Oral History Project

Camden County Historical Society

  Students from Camden High School will work with scholars and CCHS staff to collect oral histories

  from RCA employees.  The oral histories are to be archived at CCHS, used in the creation of a

  public program, included on a student-created website, and integrated into a future museum display

  at CCHS.

Katherine Mangiardi: Reflected Absence

Hunterdon Art Museum

  Creation of a contemporary art exhibit that explores the lives of women in two historic mills and

  the impact of technology on mill workers.  Public components include a public panel discussion

  and walking tour, an exhibit brochure, and an audio podcast available on the museum's website.

Visual Arts Center of New Jersey

  Series of ten lectures given by New Jersey scholars with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds 

  intended to contextualize the contemporary art on display in the Center's galleries.

 

Abraham Lincoln: An American Life Lecture Series

Hall Institute of Public Policy - New Jersey

  In cooperation with the NJ Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, a four-part lecture series

  exploring the public and private lives of Abraham Lincoln is to be held at four different sites across

  the state.  Additionally, two of the lectures will be broadcast live to a second site.

 

Originally American: Walt Whitman - Celebrating and Singing America's Bard

Camden County College, Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

  Five-part lecture and performance series focused on the works of Walt Whitman.

 

Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920s-1950s

The Newark Museum Association

  Public programs and an interactive computer kiosk exploring the historical, political, social, and

  cultural themes of the exhibition Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 

  1920s-1950s.

 

Audio Guide for the Exhibition "Cezanne and American Modernism"

The Montclair Art Museum

  Development of an audio guide to accompany the exhibition "Cezanne and American Modernism." 

  The audio guide will also be made available on the museum's website.

 

Samuel Bak: Artist-Witness to the Holocaust

  A day-long conference centered on the work of Samuel Bak.

 

India: Ancient Civilization to Modern Democracy

  A six part lecture series on the history of India from its origin to its modern-day democracy. 

 

Contemplating China's Past and Future: A Festival of Chinese Arts and Humanities

  A three-month festival exploring Chinese literature, film, music, art, education, mathematics, and

Rescuing the River

New Jersey Network Foundation

  Completion of an hour-long documentary about the history of industrialization and pollution along 

  New Jersey's Raritan River and the development of a related website.

 

A Place Out of Time - The Bordentown School

Hudson West Productions

  Technical enhancement of the documentary A Place Out of Time - The Bordentown School to

  meet new broadcast standards for NJN and PBS.  The piece will also be shown at various film  

  festivals.

 

Delaware River Heritage Trail Website

Delaware River Greenway Partnership

  Development of a website for the Delaware River Heritage Trail.  This "cyber trail" will expand on

  the physical trail, exploring sites of cultural and historical significance along the Delaware River.

  Six bilingual family story hour sessions to be conducted in English and Spanish by a storyteller,

  humanities scholar, and translator at the Paterson Free Public Library.

 

Bringing Caregivers Closer: Nurturing the Humanity and the Art of Primary Healthcare

AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center

  Day-long conference exploring primary healthcare through the lens of the humanities, featuring two

  keynotes, two panel discussions, and two breakout sessions.  The proceedings will be recorded

  and published in the ARMC journal F.I.N.D.I.N.G.S.

President Lincoln and the Sawyers of Cape May

The East Lynne Theater Company

  A four-part program exploring the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and the Cape May Civil

  War hero Henry Sawyer.  The program includes the screening of a short documentary, a staged

  reading, a discussion of the documentary, and a presentation about the history of Lincoln and

  Sawyer.

  A lunch-time lecture program featuring two guest speakers.  An exhibit relating to Lincoln, slavery,
